Over the past fifty years software developers have created a wide range of tools and methodologies to help efficiently build sophisticated and powerful applications, yet business intelligence development had been stuck in the dark ages. That is until October 2008 when Varigence was founded by Scott Currie, one of the key members of the Microsoft Visual Studio organization and later the architect and founder of the Microsoft Detego business intelligence platform.

The idea behind Varigence was to bring Scott's deep experience in sofware development tools, from years on Visual Studio, to his unique perspective, running one of the largest business intelligence platforms at the world's largest software company, and create a new business intelligence development environment unparalleled In the world.

Joining Scott at Varigence was top talent from various groups across Microsoft, as well industry super-influentials. At Varigence they created a new markup language, the Business Intelligence Markup Language (Biml), that serves as the foundation for our BI tools innovation. The first tool being a complete end-to-end IDE for BI called Mist.

Varigence then added support for .NET scripting languages integrated directly into Biml, called BimlScript. Suddenly automation became far easier and more powerful. Another Varigence breakthrough in BI development.

Along the way we also realized that while BI development tools were crucial, consuming business intelligence data is also vital. We introduced Vivid -- built on top of the world's most popular BI client tool, Microsoft Excel, it is an add-in that makes Excel a best-of-class BI client.

In April 2011 we took an important step by giving back to the community by contributing code to the open source project BIDS Helper. Our belief is that Biml is important for moving business intelligence forward as an industry, and by making it part of an open free tool we can ensure that everyone can reap some of its power.

Over the past few years we've delivered BI solutions, tools, frameworks, and services to everything from internet startups to Fortune 100 companies. We will continue our rapid acceleration of business intelligence, and we hope you’ll join us.
